I'm a geek. Fact. A couple of months back I was put in contact with a chap who was starting a Doctor Who fanzine. I sent some samples of my work, the chap liked them, and I was asked to draw some illustrations around the Peter Davison episode Warriors Of The Deep. It's not a classic, but was notable for the reintroduction of the Silurians. Recently we've seen a two parter which also wasn't a classic, but was notable for the reintroduction of the Silurians. It reminded me of this so thought I'd post it. The fanzine ran into financial trickiness before I got too far into the work, but this is my first pass at an old-school Silurian.

Here are two panels from my strip, the second part of Hilary Harper and The Triangle Of Death. I am 30 years old, but this is the first time I've ever drawn a cat. I think it came out OK. Edwin Cheshire makes his comic book debut:

Cheeze & Whine

I designed a flyer for my friend Meli's clubnight, Cheeze & Whine. The concept is that they play one cheese-y song, then a whine-y one. So for cheese I chose to draw the official best pop star in the world today and for whine I went with Crawley's finest songwriter. The design is based on a cross between a playing card and a wine label I saw t'other week that featured the French national colours, though I replaced blue with black 'cos Robert Smith and blue just feels wrong. First up, the flyers, followed by the original doodles.

The 18 Carat Love Affair - the band I have sung and written songs for over the last 2 and a half years - split up amicably last week. 'Tis a shame and all, but all good things and so on. This week I finally joined the 21st century and bought myself Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom Intuos 4 graphics tablet. It's all very exciting. I'm still getting used to it, but here is an attempt at adding tone and sky detail to panel one of Hilary Harper & The Triangle Of Death Part 1.

These are some small paintings I did a while back, playing around with watercolours. They're based on a photograph by my friend Mark Milan of an old mutual friend called Adam. Mark is a paparazzi now. I was trying to create two different feels from the same image by changing the line work and colours. Then because I had a load of brown paint left, I did this little fella too.

The next Nuisance is on Friday 19th February at the Monarch in Camden. Nuisance is the little night of Britpop joy I run with Miss Allie Bailey. This month is also extra special as we have a real life, genuine ex-member of Menswear DJ'ing for us. Oh yes. Ex-Menswear guitarist Mr Simon White will be playing us a mix of indie, 60's mod and pop. And it's free entry. This is going to be even better than the time Tiny Dancing editor David White saw Rick Witter's penis.

These are the first two panels of page 6 of 'Vive Le Re...'. In the rush to escape the bomb that has just been let off in the Foyot Restaurant, two customers have a little punch-up, desperate to be the first out of the door. Closely following these pictures are page 6 panel 1, depicting the actual explosion itself.

Hilary Harper & The Triangle of Death

I've had a very busy new year so far, lots and lots of drawing being done. To the left you'll find my inked, unlettered Pages 1 & 2 for the first installment of the rather melodramatically entitled Hilary Harper & The Triangle of Death, a strip I'm working on that will appear in the illustrative anthology Tiny Dancing. Some very good friends of mine have also contributed excellent work, including Ricky Miller's superb Metroland. It's totally free and you can request a copy by sending your address to dancer@tinydancing.co.uk and asking nicely. Hopefully over the next couple of days I'll be able to post some work from Vive Le Re…, which, after a brief stint banging my head against a wall, is "back" on "track". Pen sketches

These are initial doodles for something new and shiny...I'll explain more about this another time, but these are the first couple of sketches of Hilary Harper. The very first was scribbled into a notebook. The jaw was too heroic...or the wrong kind of heroic. He also looked kind of stoic. Hilary needed to be more flamboyant.

The next couple seemed to be heading far closer to what I was after...a cross between Adam Adamant, Jon Pertwee's Doctor and Sherlock Holmes.

Then I scribbled the poacher who opens this particular story. For my next trick, I'm going to draw some people looking to the right of the page.

Tonight! Friday 4th December: I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night at Electrowerkz. DJ set from 8pm - 9.30. Entry is £3 before 10, £4 after.

Friday 11th December: Bit of a busy one: I'm playing a solo gig at the The Purple Turtle in Camden for Glasswerk. I'm onstage at 7.30 and have unlimited £3 cheaplist, so do email me - stevehorry@googlemail.com - if you wish to be on it. Then I'm popping over to Koko, as Allie and I are running The Official Bluetones Aftershow Party upstairs at the very top of Koko in the Brainlove Room of Club NME. If you're going to see the 'Tones, just come straight up when they're done. Otherwise, it's normal Club NME prices, which I think is a fiver.

Tuesday 15th December: Another solo gig, this time supporting my friends Hot Beds at The Camden Head..

Friday 18th December: Nuisance at The Monarch Free entry Britpop party AND it's my birthday. Hoo. Rah.

586 single sleeves

While I'm on the subject of record sleeves, these are the sleeves I designed with Miss Deborah Coughlin for the singles we released as members of 586. Released between 2005 and 2007, I'm still quite proud of the artwork. That's my scrawl on the front of We Got Bored and Rags & Tags and the back of Money Is The Drug/Saying My Name and Deb's on the back of We Got Bored and the front of Money Is The Drug. I still think they look pretty great now, especially when I see them together. Well, I'm quite proud of them, anyways...

Golau Glau released their Christmas download single today. Foolstide is a dubstep ditty about the time when the Puritans banned Christmas for thirteen years back in the 17th Century. According to one blog "it sounds like a lute having a fight with a synth". I did some artwork, to which one of the collective - who prefer to remain anonymous - added some text to create the virtual sleeve. They're getting some cracking reviews and as a consequence this image is all all over the web.. Which is nice. Download it here.

'Vive Le Re...' is the name of a graphic novel script written by Mr Reggie Chamberlain-King. It's really rather good. These are some sketches I made to get myself in the mood for commencing an attempt at the artwork for it. An inking error has just destroyed page 2, so I'm using these to take me back to the happy place. Click on the images for a larger version.
